"উপমহাদেশ" কবি আল মাহমুদ রচিত মুক্তিযুদ্ধ ভিত্তিক উপন্যাস। মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময়কার জীবনচিত্রকে আশ্রয় করে লেখা উপন্যাসটিকে ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস বলা না গেলেও যুদ্ধের ভয়াবহতা, হিংস্রতা, যুদ্ধের মাঝে প্রেম, দেশপ্রেম সব কিছুরই প্রতিচ্ছবি সত্যনিষ্ঠ ভাবে তুলে ধরার প্রয়াস পেয়েছেন লেখক। বই আকারে প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয় ১৯৯৩ সালে শিল্পতরু প্রকাশনী থেকে। 'ঐতিহ্য' থেকে প্রকাশিত আল মাহমুদ রচনাবলির ৫ম খণ্ডে যুক্ত করা হয়েছে উপন্যাসটি।
বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধ কেন্দ্রিক এই উপন্যাসটির নাম রাখা হয়েছে 'উপমহাদেশ'। উপন্যাসটি শুরু হয়েছে পরাধীন বাংলাদেশ তথা পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে, কাহিনী গিয়ে পৌঁছেছে ভারতে, উপন্যাসের শেষ দৃশ্যের অবতারণা হয়েছে স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশে। আক্ষরিক অর্থেই উপন্যাসের ব্যাপকতা ছিল উপমহাদেশ জুড়ে। তাছাড়া বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধ বাংলাদেশের একক কোন বিষয় না থেকে ভারত - পাকিস্তানের রাজনৈতিক সমস্যার কেন্দ্রবিন্দু হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছিল। এই যুদ্ধ প্রভাবিত করেছিল পুরো ভারত উপমহাদেশের রাজনৈতিক চিন্তা চেতনাকে। সেই দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকেই হয়তো 'উপমহাদেশ' নামকরণ।
উপন্যাস মাত্রই একটা সংঘবদ্ধ 'প্লট' থাকবে। এই উপন্যাসের গল্পও এগিয়েছে একটা নিদর্ষ্ট প্লটকে কেন্দ্র করে। যুদ্ধের ভয়াবহতা, দেশত্যাগ, শরণার্থী জীবন, মানবীয় প্রেম - বিরহ সবকিছুই এক সুতোয় বেঁধেছেন
কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র কবি হাদী মীরের বর্ণনায়। পাকিস্তানীদের দানবীয় হামলার মুখে দেশ ছাড়তে গিয়ে কবি হাদীর পরিচয় হয় নন্দিনী আর তার বোন সোমার সাথে। আগন্তুক কিছু পুরুষের হাত থেকে নন্দিনীকে বাঁচাতে তাকে নিজের স্ত্রী বলে পরিচয় দেন কবি। সেখানেই লেখক দুজনের ভাগ্যকে জুড়ে দেন একসাথে। কবির সর্বাত্মক চেষ্টা স্বত্বেও নন্দিনী, সোমা দুই বোনই রাজাকারদের পাশবিকতার শিকার হয়। গুলি লেগে মারা যায় সোমা আর নন্দিনী হয়ে পড়ে কবির উপর নির্ভরশীল। অসহায় নন্দিনীর প্রতি দায়বদ্ধতা থেকেই হোক আর নারী - পুরুষের স্বভাবজাত আকর্ষণ থেকেই হোক নন্দিনীর পাশে থাকবার যে প্রতিশ্রুতি কবি তাকে দিয়েছিলেন সেটা ডাল পালা মেলে প্রেমে পূর্ণতা পায়। সময়ের সাথে যুদ্ধের ভয়াবহতা যেমন বাড়ে তেমনি বাড়তে থাকে এই দুই নর নারীর পারস্পরিক প্রেম। উপন্যাসের কাহিনী চক্রে সামনে আসে অস্থায়ী সরকারের কার্যক্রম, প্রকাশ পায় মুক্তিযুদ্ধের প্রতি কলকাতার লেখকদের সুহৃদ মনোভাব, খোঁজ পাওয়া যায় কবি পত্নী হামিদার, আসে মার্কসবাদী বিপ্লবীদের প্রতিরোধ যুদ্ধের কথা, আসে বাংলাদেশ মানুষের উপর নির্যাতন এবং বাংলাদেশীদের প্রতিবাদের গল্প।
চরিত্র চিত্রণে লেখকের দক্ষতা অনস্বীকার্য। কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র কবি হাদী মীর। চরিত্রটি লেখকের আত্মজৈবনিক ছোঁয়া থেকে একেবারে মুক্ত নয়। উপন্যাসের কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র বলেই তাকে যুদ্ধে অকুতোভয় সৈনিক হিসেবে যেমন দেখানো হয়নি, তেমনি দেখানো হয়নি দেশের প্রতি দায়হীন ভাবেও। স্ত্রী থাকা সত্বেও বিধর্মী নারীর সাথে তার প্রেমে জড়িয়ে পড়া নিয়ে সামাজিকতার ভয় থেকে কবি মুক্ত ছিলেন না। এমনকি নন্দিনীর প্রতি তার মোহগ্রস্ততা স্বত্বেও উপেক্ষা করতে পারেননি স্ত্রী হামিদাকে। যুদ্ধের বিক্ষুব্ধতার মাঝে ভেঙে পড়া নৈতিকতা রক্ষায় মানুষের মনস্তাত্ত্বিক টানাপোড়েনর প্রতীক কবি। বিবাহিত মুসলিম কবি হাদীর প্রেমে পড়া, কবি পত্নী হামিদার প্রতি তার সাময়িক ঈর্ষা স্বত্বেও যুদ্ধে সর্বোস্ব হারানো নন্দিনী ভট্টাচার্যের বেঁচে থাকার আত্মপ্রত্যয়, জীবন বাজি রেখে মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের সাহায্য করতে দেশে ফিরে যাওয়া, একটু আশ্রয়ের আশায় এমনকি ধর্ম ত্যাগ করতে চাওয়া বা কবি পত্নীকে বোন বলে মেনে নেয়া তাকে পাঠকের কাছে গ্রহণযোগ্য করে তোলে। উপন্যাসের আরেকটি প্রধান চরিত্র হামিদা। পুরো উপন্যাসে তার শারিরিক উপস্থিতি দু'বারের বেশি না হলেও কবি পত্নী, তেজস্বী, যোদ্ধা, মমতাময়ী এই নারী চরিত্রটির প্রতিপ্রত্তি ছিল উপন্যাসের প্লট জুড়েই।
মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সার্বিক চিত্র উপন্যাসটিতে লেখক তুলে ধরতে পেরেছেন তেমন দাবী করা যায় না, হয়তো সম্ভবও নয় সেটা। যুদ্ধের উন্মাদনায় মানবিকতা কতোটা ভেঙে পড়ে তা দেখানোর চেষ্টা করেছেন লেখক। হত্যা, ধর্ষণ, রাহাজানি এমন কোন বর্বরতা নাই যা করেনি পাক বাহিনী আর তার দোসররা। এমনকি নৈতিক স্খলন ঠেকিয়ে রাখতে পারেনি কিছু কিছু মুক্তিযোদ্ধাও, তারাও নারীদের উপর পাশবিক হয়ে উঠেছিল। প্রবাসী সরকারের আন্তরিকতা এবং অসহায়তা দুটিই তুলে ধরেছেন লেখক। তুলে ধরেছেন বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতায় ভারতের আন্ত- রাজনৈতিক হিসেব নিকেশ। সেই সাথে স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের উপর ভারতীয় উপনিবেশের ভবিষ্যত চিত্র নিয়ে মার্কসবাদীদের বিরূপ মনোভাবের কথা। বর্ণনার সাবলীলতা বিষয়বস্তুকে আরো হৃদয়গ্রাহী করে তুলেছে। 'উপমহাদেশে'র উপস্থাপন শৈলী আর কাহিনীর সংঘবদ্ধতা পাঠককে আটকে রাখবে বইয়ের পাতায়।

Interview body language
1. Show confidence: Sit up straight, and smile. (আত্মবিশ্বাস দেখান : সোজা হয়ে বসুন আর হাসুন .)
2. Greet others with a firm handshake. (ভালোভাবে হাত মেলান .)
3. Make eye contact, but don't stare. If there are several people you are talking to, give them all some eye contact. (চোখ মেলান কিন্তু তাকিয়ে থাকবেন না . যদি ওখানে অনেক লোক থাকে তবে সকলের সাথে চোখ একবার হলেও মেলাবেন .)
4. Relax your shoulders. Tension is often demonstrated in your shoulders. (আপনার কাঁধ শিথিল রাখবেন . আপনার চিন্তা প্রায় আপনার কাঁধ দেখে বোঝা যাই .)
5. Use your hands confidently. Don't fidget. (আত্মবিশ্বাসের সাথে আপনার হাত ব্যবহার করুন . আঙ্গুলের সাথে খেলবেন না , এতে মনে হয় যে আপনি উত্দিগ্ন .

Here are some terms that you can use for describing your strengths
1. Creativity: I am creative, and can think out of the box. ( আমি কোনো কাজকে সৃজনশীলভাবে করি . আমি কাজকে একটি অন্য নজরে পারি .)

How to dress for an interview.
For men:
1. A formal suit, ideally black, grey, or dark blue in color. (a coat, a shirt, and trousers). Avoid wearing jeans. (আনুষ্ঠানিক কাপড় পড়ুন , আদর্শভাবে - কালো , ধূসর না নীল রঙের পড়ুন . জিন্স পরবেন না .)
2. Wear a sober coloured shirt (ideally white). Avoid flashy colours, prints, and fabrics. (সাদা কাপড় পড়ুন . বেশি চকমকে কাপড় পরবেন না .)
3. Wear a tie, if you are wearing a suit. (যদি আপনি স্যুট পরে থাকেন , তাহলে একটা টাই পরবেন .)
4. Be clean shaven, and keep a simple hairstyle. (আপনার দাড়ি কেটে যাবেন আর সাধারণভাবে চুল গুছিয়ে যাবেন .)
5. If you have a beard, trim it properly. (যদি আপনি দাড়ি রাখেন তবে তাকে ছোট এবং পরিস্কার রাখুন .)
6. Make sure your nails are trimmed and clean. (সুনিশ্চিত করবেন যেন আপনার নখ ছোট আর পরিষ্কার হয় .)
7. Wear a professional looking watch. (If you want to) (যদি আপনি ঘড়ি পড়তে চান তো পেশাদারী দেখাচ্ছে ঘড়ি পড়ুন .)

What not to do at an interview
1. Do not be late for an interview. It leaves a very bad impression. (ইন্টারভিউ এর জায়গাতে পৌঁছাতে দেরী করবেননা . এতে ভালো প্রভাব পরে না .)
2. While answering a question, do not look here and there. It shows that you are not confident. (প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেওয়ার সময় এদিক ওদিক দেখবেন না . এতে মনে হয় যেন আপনার মধ্যে আত্মবিশ্বাস নেই .)
3. If you do not know an answer, it is best to say 'I don't know', rather than making something up. (যদি আপনি কোনো প্রশ্নের উত্তর না জেনে থাকেন তাহলে 'আমি জানি না ' বলাটা ভুল কিছু বলার থেকে অনেক ভালো .)
4. Do not list any false information in your CV. (আপনার বায়ো ডাটাতে মিথ্যা কোনো তথ্য দিবেন না .)
5. Do not wear casual or shabby clothes. Also, avoid wearing flashy clothes or accessories. (লৌকিকতাবর্জিত আর প্রেস না করা কাপড় পরবেন না . বেশি চকচকে কাপড় আর গহনা পরবেন না .)
6. Don't shake hands with sweaty hands. Ensure you wipe your hands before going in. (ভিজা হাতে হাত মিলাবেন না । ঢুকার আগেই সুনিশ্চিত করবেন আপনার হাত যেন মুছা থাকে .)

Curriculum vitae (CV) or Résumé guidelines
1. Restrict the length of your résumé to a single page. (রেসুমে কে এক পাতার মধ্যে রাখার চেষ্টা করা উচিত .)
2. Use professional fonts like: Calibri, Times New Roman, Arial (একটি পেশাদারী ফন্টের ব্যবহার করবেন , যেমন : Calibri, Times New Roman, Arial)
3. Avoid mentioning unnecessary personal details (প্রয়োজনের অধিক ব্যক্তিগত তথ্য দেওয়া থেকে বিরত থাকুন )
4. Arrange your text in bullet points, and enlist the details in short, crisp sentences (নিজের সম্পর্কিত সব তথ্য ছোট করে এবং স্পষ্ট ভাষায় লিখুন . লিস্টের বিবরণ পয়েন্টসে পূরণ করুন )
9 Confusing English words
1. Loose/Lose
To lose something is to misplace something (কিছু হারিয়ে ফেলা)
Whereas, loose describes the lack of tightness or means to set something free. (ঢিলা)
Example: Your trousers are very loose. (তোমার ট্রাউজার্ অনেক ঢিলা.)
You may lose your wallet if it falls out of your pocket. (যদি মানিব্যাগ তোমার পকেট থেকে পরে যাই তাহলে তুমি তা হারাতে পারো)
2. Principal/Principle
The principal is the most important person, usually the head of a school. (অধ্যক্ষ)
Principles are beliefs or rules. (তত্ত্ব)
Example: The principal’s favorite principle is to treat others the way you wish to be treated. (অধ্যক্ষের সবচেয়ে পছন্দের তত্ত্ব হচ্ছে - অন্যের সাথে আপনি তেমন ভাবেই ব্যবহার করুন, যেমনটা আপনি আপনার জন্য চান.)
3. Complement/Compliment/Complimentary
Compliments are praises or approval, an admiring remark. (অভিনন্দন জানানো)
To say that something is complimentary can also mean that it is free, or comes in addition to something you already have. (প্রসংশনীয় উপহার, বিনামূল্যের)
A complement is something that is added to something else to improve the qualities of each. (সহায়ক, যখন কোনো কিছুতে অন্য একটা কিছু যোগ করলে তার গুণমান বৃদ্ধি পাই.)
Example: The man at the door complimented my brown dress and said that it complements my brown eyes. (দরজায় দাড়ানো লোকটি আমার বাদামী জামার প্রসংশা করলো আর বললো যে আমার বাদামী চোখের সাথে জামাটি ভালো মানাচ্ছে.)
The peanuts are complimentary. (বাদামগুলো বিনামূল্যের.)
4. Desert/Dessert
A desert is a dry, desolate place (noun). (মরুভূমি)
Deserted means that something is abandoned. (ছেড়ে পালিয়ে যাওয়া, একলা হয়ে যাওয়া)
Dessert is a course that comes at the end of a meal, usually consisting of sweet food. (ভোজনের শেষে দেওয়া মিষ্ঠান্ন)
a. Anil brought dessert to the picnic. (অনিল পিকনিকে মিষ্ঠান্ন এনেছে.)
b. This used to be a beautiful palace, but now it seems deserted. (এটা আগে খুব সুন্দর প্রাসাদ ছিল কিন্তু এখন এই জায়গাটা খালি হয়ে গেছে.)
c. The Thar desert is in the state of Rajasthan. (থর মরুভূমি রাজস্থানে অবস্থিত.)

What to do at an interview
1. Carry your CV and other required documents in a folder. Documents such as: mark sheets, salary slips, key certificates, experience letters (if applicable). (আপনার বায়োডাটা ও অন্য কাগজপত্র সাথে নেবেন . অন্য কাগজপত্র যেমন : আপনার প্রগতিপত্র , সার্টিফিকেট , আর যদি আপনি আগে কোথাও কাজ করে থাকেন তার অভিজ্ঞতার লেটার . )
2. Dress smartly. Before going for an interview, practice in front of a mirror. (ভালো জামা কাপড় পরিধান করে যাবেন আর আইনার সামনে অবশ্যই প্রাকটিস করবেন .)
3. Reach the interview venue before time. It helps you look around and relax a bit. (ইন্টারভিউের জায়গাতে সময়ের আগে যাবেন , এতে আপনার কাছে আসে পাশে দেখার সময় থাকবে আর আপনি শান্ত বোধ করবেন .)
4. Read about the company and the job profile, so that you could connect your skills to the profile you are applying for. (কোম্পনি এবং ওখানে আপনার কাজের সম্পর্কে অবশ্যই পড়ুন , এতে আপনি ইন্টারভিউ এর সময় আপনার কৌশলতা সম্পর্কে বলতে পারবেন .)

5 Confusing Phrases
1. Hang up/hang out
To “hang up” means to end a phone call (ফোন কল সমাপ্ত করা ); to “hang
out” means to spend time relaxing, usually with a friend (কারোর সাথে বাইরে যাওয়া ).
Example: If he hangs up before I’m done talking, I will be too mad to
hang out with him this weekend. (যদি সে আমার কথা বলা শেষ হওয়ার আগে ফোন কেটে দেয় , তাহলে আমি ওর সাথে বাইরে যাওয়ার বেলায় রাগ করবো )
2. Look up / look forward
To “look up” means to search and find information about something,
usually in a dictionary or some sort of database. (কোনো জিনিসের সম্পর্কে তথ্য খোজা , সাধারণত কোনো শব্দকোষে না ডাটাবেসে .)
To “look forward” to something means to be excited about an event that
will happen in the future. (ভবিষতের কোনো কাজ নিয়ে আশায় থাকা .)
Example: After looking up the plot of David Dhawan’s latest movie, I’m
really looking forward to seeing it! (ডেভিড ধাওয়ানের নতুন সিনেমার প্লটটি দেখার পর , আমি সিনেমাটি দেখার জন্য উত্সুক আছি !)
3. Get into/get over
To “get into” means to become involved or interested in something. (কোনো কাজে অংশগ্রহন করা )
To “get over” can either mean the opposite of this — to lose interest in something — or it can also mean to recover from something, particularly an illness. (কোনো জিনিসের ওপরে উঠা - কোনো দুঃক্ষকে ভুলতে পারা )
Example: After I get over this flu, which is making me so weak, I’m going to get into dancing again. (এই ফ্লু যার কারণে আমি দুর্বল বোধ করছি , এটা থেকে সুস্থ হওয়ার পর আমি আবার নাচে যোগ দিব )
4. Throw out/throw up
To “throw up” means to vomit (বমি করা ), whereas to “throw out” means to dispose of something that is no longer being used. (কোনো জিনিসকে বাইরে ফেলে দেওয়া )
Example: If his baby throws up on the floor in my living room, I’ll have to throw away the rug that’s in there. (যদি তার বাচ্চা বমি করে আমার রুমের মেঝেতে বমি করে , তাহলে আমাকে রুমের কম্বলটি বাইরে ফেলে দিতে হবে )
5. Run into/run over
To “run into” someone can have the literal meaning of colliding with their body, but the phrase often means to meet or see someone unexpectedly. (কারোর সাথে সুযোগে দেখা করা )
To “run over” something means to drive a vehicle over that person or thing. (কোনো জিনিসের উপর দিয়ে চলে যাওয়া )
Example: I was so excited when I ran into my friend that I forgot to look both ways when crossing the street and a car almost ran me over!(যখন আমি হঠাৎ করে আমার বন্ধুকে দেখতে পাই তখন আমি আসে পাশে দেখতে ভুলে যাই আর একটি গাড়ি প্রায় আমার ওপর দিয়ে চলে গেছিল )

6 Ways to Start a Conversation
1. How’s it going? (সব কিছু কেমন চলছে ?)
This is an informal way to say, “How are you?” (আপনি কেমন আছেন , বলার এটা লৌকিকতাবর্জিত পদ্ধতি )
2. Long time no see! (অনেক সময় হয়ে গেল আপনাকে দেখেছি )
This may look strange as a written sentence, but it’s a common thing people say when they haven’t seen each other in a long time. (যখন আপনি কারোর সাথে অনেক দিন পর কথা বলছেন তখন এটি বলা ঠিক হবে )
Another way to say this is(এটাকে বলার আরো একটি পদ্ধতি আছে ): I haven’t seen you in ages!(আমি আপনাকে অনেক দিন ধরে দেখছি না )
Idioms for busy
1. All hands on deck
Meaning: When there’s a lot of work to be done and everyone needs to be involved. (যখন কাজ অনেক বেশি থাকে এবং সবাইকে একত্রে কাজ করতে হয়)

Meaning: A place where there are a lot of things happening and everyone is busy. (যেখানে অনেক কাজ হচ্ছে এবং সবাই ব্যস্ত। )
